Your magnification level will be unique to you and you alone, but there are a few guidelines you can follow to find a power that works for you. Loupes can vary from 2.5x-8.0x, and the learning curve will become more challenging as the magnification level increases. Of course, the higher the magnification the more detail you will see. For first-timers, dental hygiene examinations, preventive care, and other general oral procedures, a lower loupe magnification from 2.3x to 3.5x will often be sufficient. If your working distance (WD) is 15” or less, choosing a 2.5x for your first pair of loupes will work just fine.
